Ruto Allies in Ukambani Reject Kalonzo and Muthama’s Call for UDA-Wiper Talks- Your Time is Up

Youthful Ukambani leaders aligned with the Kenya Kwanza coalition have rejected former UDA party leader Johnson Muthama’s calls for unity discussions with the Wiper party.

On Friday, Mr. Muthama proposed bipartisan talks among Ukambani leaders to discuss the community’s role in President William Ruto’s administration and its future.

The ex-Machakos senator accused President Ruto of sidelining Kambas in his government, aligning with Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s views.

Mr. Muthama expressed frustration that the Kamba community was excluded from national benefits, despite his role in forming the UDA party, which won the elections. He made these remarks at the funeral of former Cabinet minister Joseph Konzollo Munyao’s wife in Mbooni, Makueni County, attended by Mr. Musyoka and several Wiper leaders.

Mr. Muthama’s pledge to lead the Kamba community on a new political path, separate from Kenya Kwanza, angered President Ruto’s regional allies.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua and UDA National Organising Secretary Vincent Musyoka Kawaya accused Mr. Musyoka and Mr. Muthama of misleading the Kamba community for selfish political reasons.

In interviews with Gossipa2z.com, young leaders argued that the Kamba community feels adequately represented in government without Mr. Musyoka and Mr. Muthama holding senior positions.

They emphasized Kenya’s democratic nature, noting that current senior appointees represent the community and will address its social and economic needs.

Dr. Mutua highlighted that the community voted against William Ruto in large numbers, yet he appointed Kambas to significant roles and initiated regional projects.

The CS criticized those seeking political relevance by organizing regional leader meetings, labeling it as greed-driven.

Mr. Kawaya, a key political figure for President Ruto in the region, said it was misleading to claim Kambas were unrepresented in government simply because Mr. Musyoka is in opposition.

He noted that President Ruto showed goodwill by appointing key Kamba leaders despite the community’s minimal support in the last election.

Mr. Kawaya challenged Mr. Muthama to demonstrate the outcomes of past meetings he convened with Wiper loyalists before calling for another.

He pointed out that Kamba leaders in the Cabinet and other high-ranking positions signify adequate representation, rendering the agitation unnecessary.

Mr. Kawaya reminded Mr. Muthama, a Parliamentary Service Commission commissioner, that Kambas were “unjustifiably” included in Dr. Ruto’s government, and thus had no grounds for discontent within Kenya Kwanza.

Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse echoed these sentiments, suggesting Kamba leaders were politically outdated and their exit inevitable.

Mr. Mutuse emphasized the emergence of young leaders ready to take over Ukambani’s political landscape, criticizing those who have historically mismanaged the region.

He compared the generational leadership transitions in Mount Kenya and Rift Valley to Ukambani’s need for fresh leadership.

Mr. Mutuse urged young leaders to step up, advocating for a pro-people, pro-nation, and pro-development approach rather than clinging to outdated ideologies.

He highlighted that over 75% of the electorate is under 30, stressing the necessity for generational change in leadership.

Mr. Muthama’s unity call came shortly after President Ruto expressed his commitment to mentoring young leaders, including Mr. Kawaya, to prepare them for national leadership.

The President, speaking in Meru on Thursday, stated he had assigned young MPs critical responsibilities to help them gain leadership experience.
