Ruto Allies Call for Constitutional Changes Before 2027
A group of leaders from Kenyaโs North Rift region is pushing for constitutional amendments to fix challenges they say have persisted since the 2010 Constitution was enacted.
The leaders, who are allied to President William Rutoโs United Democratic Alliance (UDA), want the referendum to take place alongside the 2027 General Election. They argue this would reduce costs and boost voter turnout.
During a church service at AIC Boma in Kapsabet, Nandi Hills MP Bernard Kitur stressed that Kenya should not delay starting the amendment process.
โLet us start the process of changing the Constitution as soon as now. If there are any bad issues, let us start working on them right now. We were told those who worked on the draft from 2003 had foresight, but if the same issues have been with us for 15 years, then let us bring the process and kickstart the changes,โ Kitur said.
Kitur suggested that all key proposals be consolidated into a single referendum question, allowing Kenyans to vote on the changes during the 2027 elections.

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang supported the idea, noting that 15 years of implementation had exposed both strengths and weaknesses of the 2010 Constitution.
โWith 15 years of a new constitutional dispensation, we can now say that let is change this particular area and make some adjustments. It is time for us to evaluate and see what works and what does not work,โ Sang remarked.
According to the leaders, the proposed amendments would strengthen governance and development by addressing unresolved issues.
They highlighted the ongoing legal disputes over the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) and the failure to implement the two-thirds gender rule as urgent matters that require constitutional review.
The push for constitutional change has also been fueled by ODM leader Raila Odingaโs recent proposal to restructure devolution, including transferring more powers over education.
