Ruto Addresses Njiru Land Woes as Demolition Looms

President William Ruto addressed the increasing cases of land snatching in the country on Thursday, as hundreds of Kenyans face eviction from the land of the late billionaire Gershon Kirima in Njiru.

During the inauguration of the Motor Vehicles for Education offices in Kasarani, Ruto condemned the impunity that allows fraudsters to forge land titles and defraud Kenyans.

“What we must get rid of in the country is impunity. We all must play by the rules and we are all equal. The people who are willing to negotiate should do so that is the best way to go about it,” he added.

Ruto was informed that a portion of Kenyans had constructed flats and residential dwellings without the required documentation near the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE).

According to reports, the institution occupied approximately 76 acres of land, but only 20 acres remain.

The Head of State disclosed that the government was willing to negotiate with the building’s proprietors to avoid unnecessary demolition.

“I am told some people have built flats around this area, we will negotiate with them. We need the money to build factories, we shall divide the land and sell it to them at market value,” Ruto declared.

He urged the area’s member of parliament, Ronald Karauri, to work with the settlers on the proposed land to develop a strategy for moving forward.

“Karauri all your people, we have no problem with them we will do the valuation of the land, get the money and they can continue with their lives. Otherwise, you know the drill,” he stated.

To prevent such occurrences, the President urged the state and federal governments to facilitate a more suitable form of settlement for such settlers.

He emphasized that doing so will prevent Kenyans from losing their homes to demolitions and that the government will use the funds for development initiatives.

The governor of Nairobi, Johnson Sakaja, was also present and emphasized that the county must formalize the settlement procedure.

“Many of the victims were third-party buyers. As a county we will liaise with the Ministry of Land and the regional commissoner with your permission Mr President, we will discuss with the families in Njiru to find out a way they can pay for the land. We cannot go and demolish over 6,000 houses,” he remarked.
