Russia Affirms Kenya Alliance Amidst Ruto’s Surprising Ukraine Stance

Just one day after the Pentagon of the United States disclosed Kenya’s participation in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, Russia declared its intention to maintain a friendly association with Kenya.

The Russian Ambassador to Kenya, Dmitry Maksimychev, conveyed this message while commemorating Diplomats Day on Saturday, February 10th.

Furthermore, Maksimychev mentioned that Russia considered Africa a region of great importance in terms of its foreign policy objectives.

The Ambassador highlighted in his communication that, from Kenya’s perspective, Russia was exerting significant efforts to enhance collaboration between the two nations.

“Our trade grows steadily as I understand according to the Kenyan statistics, the trade volume between Russia and Kenya has reached $500 million (Ksh81 billion),” Maksimychev stated.

He mentioned that the government led by Vladimir Putin was making every effort to boost the levels of trade between Kenya and Russia.

“Russia is ready to cooperate with Kenya in every field that is of interest to the Kenyans themselves,” Maksimychev promised.

The ambassador pointed out that collaboration in trade primarily focused on various sectors such as agricultural products, chemicals, fertilizers, and construction materials, among others.

Regarding Africa overall, Maksimychev highlighted that the Africa-Russia summits conducted in 2017 and 2023 are indicative of Moscow’s strong emphasis on Africa within its foreign policy.

“Both events played an extremely important role in the expansion of our partnership with Africa,” he remarked.

On February 8, Lloyd J. Austin III, the Secretary of Defense for the United States, disclosed that Kenya had joined the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. This group, comprising more than 50 nations, collaborates to provide military assistance to Ukraine.

This occurred while engaging in a discussion with Aden Duale, the Defence Cabinet Secretary, at the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defence.

CS Duale expressed that Kenya was prepared to establish an enduring strategic partnership with the United States to foster peace and stability.
