Robert Mbui Spills the Beans on Deep-Rooted Bribery Scheme in Parliament
Kathiani Constituency MP Robert Mbui has admitted that corruption and extortion inside Parliament are not new, saying the problem has existed for many years.
Speaking during a media interview on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Mbui revealed that money has often been used to influence debates and decisions on the floor of the House.
โI believe money changes hands to influence decisions in Parliament,โ he said, confirming long-standing claims of misconduct among lawmakers.
Mbui added that the unethical practices have been ongoing since he was first elected, noting that he has personally witnessed them.
โIt is not something new. From the time I joined Parliament, I have seen it happening repeatedly,โ he explained.
The legislator further recalled that during the 11th Parliament (2013โ2017), MPs were forced to dissolve the Budget and Appropriations Committee after serious corruption allegations.
โDuring my time in the 11th Parliament, we disbanded the Budget and Appropriations Committee because of misconduct and unethical actions by its members,โ Mbui stated.

President Ruto Warns MPs Over Bribery
Mbuiโs remarks come shortly after President William Ruto condemned corruption in Parliament, accusing some MPs of taking bribes to pass key bills.
The President, speaking on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the official opening of the Devolution Conference in Homa Bay, warned MPs against demanding bribes to alter or ignore official reports.
โWe cannot allow parliamentary committees to ask for bribes in exchange for writing reports or turning a blind eye to corruption in either national or county governments,โ Ruto said.
He stressed that the government is committed to transparency and accountability, warning that corruption within oversight bodies threatens the foundation of democracy.
โWe are building a country where institutions function properly and every arm of government upholds integrity,โ he added.
