Rising Toll: Shakahola Grave Exhumations Reach 150 Bodies

The investigation into cult leader Paul Mackenzie continued on Thursday with the exhumation of five more bodies, bringing the total number of bodies discovered to date to 150.

At a press conference, Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha provided this update, noting that the number of bodies exhumed was the lowest it has been since the exercise began a month ago.

Ms. Onyancha also reported that two adult males were rescued today, and both of them are in stable condition. This brings the total number of people who have been rescued to 72 at this time.

She also mentioned that the number of people who have reported being missing has been steadily climbing, reaching 594 as of Thursday and that the number of DNA samples that have been collected has remained the same.

There was a successful reunification of families for fourteen different people.

Exhumations in the Shakahola forest continued on Tuesday with the discovery of 21 bodies, marking the beginning of the second phase of the process.

On Wednesday, police reported recovering an additional 11 bodies from the Shakahola forest and rescuing two people who were located there.

The majority of the bodies, according to the police’s estimation. Belong to Mackenzie’s adherents, whom he allegedly ordered to starve to death so they could “meet Jesus.”

According to the Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor. Starvation appears to be the primary cause of death among the victims. However, some of the victims, including children, were either suffocated, strangled, or beaten to death before their deaths.

According to investigations carried out by GossipA2Z. Gravesites that had been mapped out by homicide detectives are still in the process of being processed.

This comes in the wake of the discovery of yet another location that may be a mass grave. During the previous month, detectives led by the chief of the Homicide Unit, Martin Nyuguto, located 32 grave sites.
