Rigathi Gachagua Responds to Raila Odinga’s Claim That He Can’t Fix Kenya’s Problems
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hit back at ODM leader Raila Odinga after Raila claimed that Gachagua isn’t the answer to Kenya’s challenges.
While speaking in Bomet on Saturday, July 12, Raila said that even if Gachagua became president, Kenya would still face the same issues. He pushed for a national conversation to address the country’s growing problems.
“It’s time for Kenyans to sit down and talk about what’s really wrong. Protests alone won’t solve anything. Saying ‘Ruto must go’ isn’t enough, because even if he left, it wouldn’t fix the issues. Gachagua wouldn’t help either—he wouldn’t bring change. We need everyone involved—young people, women, and men,” Raila said.
In response, Gachagua, speaking during a church service in the United States on Sunday, said he has never claimed to be Kenya’s solution. Instead, he said the real solution is ensuring President Ruto serves only one term.

“Raila said I can’t be the solution—he’s right. I’ve never said I am. The real answer is to make Ruto a one-term president, and nothing will stop that,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua also criticized Raila’s proposal for a national dialogue, claiming it’s just a tactic to slow down their political momentum.
“He wants a national meeting? That’s just a trick. Ruto sent him to distract us from pushing for a one-term presidency,” he said.
Gachagua went on to accuse Raila of focusing on personal gains instead of helping ordinary Kenyans. He pointed out that the previous talks between Raila and Ruto, such as the NADCO deal and the 10-point MOU after Raila lost the AU chair bid, haven’t brought any real change.
“You talked with Ruto through NADCO—nothing came of it. Then after the AU position fell through, you signed another agreement, promising things like no more abductions or killings. But those problems have only gotten worse. None of those agreements have been followed through. Now you want a third dialogue?” Gachagua said.
