Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out about the chaos that erupted during his return to Kenya from the United States.

Gachagua, who left Nairobi for a political tour of the US on July 9, landed back in the country on Thursday, August 21, after six weeks abroad.

What was planned as a grand homecoming quickly turned violent after his convoy was attacked with stones along Mombasa Road. The former deputy president had intended to address supporters at Kamukunji grounds but dropped the plan after the clashes.

Speaking on a local radio station, Gachagua accused the government of sponsoring the chaos.

He insisted the rowdy groups were organized to disrupt his reception, but still noted that the turnout was overwhelming.

“Kasongo and his people planned for the goons to attack, but God is powerful. It’s God’s grace that the person who was impeached to go to Wamunyoro was received well in America, and only to come back to receive millions of people waiting for me,” he said.

Gachagua further revealed that his stay in the US was fully financed by supporters in the diaspora, dismissing claims that he traveled to seek campaign funds. He explained that Kenyan communities abroad catered for his food, transport, and accommodation as he moved from state to state sharing his political message.

“While I was staying in America, I didn’t spend any money. Kenyans in America are the ones who planned everything for me, car to use, food,” he said.

According to Gachagua, his US visit was meant to keep Kenyans abroad informed about the current political situation in Kenya so they can make better political choices.

“I went to search for our people to tell them what was happening here in Kenya. They wanted to know what was happening from a truthful man. I told Kenyans in the US that back here we have a lot of problems, and they remember their families with hospital bills. Food and education as things are tough. I took time to look for our cousins because even if our community is big, we can’t do it on our own,” he added.

Before his arrival, several political leaders and government allies had called for his arrest, accusing him of making reckless statements while abroad.

Mandera senator Ali Roba was among those demanding Gachaguaโ€™s immediate arrest upon landing. Roba dismissed the DCP leaderโ€™s claims that President William Ruto had ever met representatives of the Somali terror group al-Shabaab.

According to Roba, the presidentโ€™s activities in Mandera were always public, and at no point did he engage in secret meetings, especially with terror suspects. His views were supported by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who warned that Gachaguaโ€™s remarks could endanger national security.

However, Gachaguaโ€™s deputy, Cleophas Malala, cautioned that arresting his party leader would push the country into political unrest.
