Revealed: Hospitals That Have Confirmed Migration to SHIF From NHIF
The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and two other Level 6 hospitals have confirmed the successful implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA) program, aligning with the government’s long-term goal of delivering quality healthcare to Kenyans nationwide.
KNH, a leading public referral hospital in Nairobi and across the country, announced on Wednesday, October 2, that the Emergency Critical and Chronic Illness Fund (ECCIF) and the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) are now fully operational for both inpatient and outpatient services.
KNH CEO Dr. Evanson Kamuri stated, “The implementation of the Social Health Authority at Kenyatta National Hospital marks a significant milestone. It aligns with our dedication to providing world-class healthcare and improving patient satisfaction and health outcomes.”
In addition to KNH, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital have also implemented the SHA program.
This update means that half of Kenya’s Level 6 hospitals are now SHIF-ready, with more hospitals expected to adopt the system soon.

The government has confirmed the imminent transition of more hospitals to the SHA system, including Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, Nakuru Level 6 Hospital, Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, and Mediheal Hospital and Fertility Centre.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Health released a statement addressing key concerns, including the status of NHIF members admitted before September 30 under NHIF packages. The ministry assured that no patient should be detained in hospitals, and they remain eligible for discharge using the NHIF system.
The ministry also clarified that the law ensures automatic transition into the new system for NHIF-enrolled Kenyans. Those who transitioned are encouraged to verify and update their profiles and add dependents via official SHA channels at www.sha.co.ke.
SHA integrates preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative healthcare services at Level 4, 5, and 6 facilities.
Most Kenyans under the previous NHIF system have received confirmation via text messages of their automatic transition to SHA, with expectations for normal service to resume as Level 6 hospitals complete their SHA system integration.
