Rescued by Kindness: Kisumu Teen’s Suicide Struggle Ends in Bright Future, Thanks to CS Jumwa’s Generosity
A 15-year-old girl residing in Ombeyi village, Kisumu county, faced financial challenges preventing her from enrolling in Form One. However, she can now find solace as Aisha Jumwa, the Cabinet Secretary for Gender and Culture, stepped in to assist her.
Esther Atieno Oduor, who achieved a score of 284 marks in the previous year’s KCPE examination, resides in the Muhoroni subcounty and has been at home with little optimism about realizing her educational aspirations.
According to her father, Dancun Oduor, a motorcycle taxi rider, she came close to taking her own life when they were unable to gather enough funds for her school fees.
Atieno’s bravery was rewarded when she fearlessly approached the CS seeking assistance to enroll in Form One.
Moved by Atieno’s narrative and inspired by her bravery, Jumwa contributed Sh30,000 to assist her in acquiring the necessary school supplies for enrollment at Koru Girls High School.
She instructed Roy Telewa, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, to settle a yearly fee of Sh56,000.
Jumwa committed to covering Atieno’s school expenses for the next four years through the Aisha Jumwa Foundation.
“From today, I’m going to take care of your education. My foundation is not only supporting children in Kilifi county but the country at large,” she said.
Jumwa expressed that providing children, particularly those who are both bright and in need, with education is the most valuable investment parents and well-wishers can make.

The computer scientist mentioned that she would carefully and directly supervise the girl’s performance.
Jumwa requested the local chief to ensure the girl attends school, encouraging Atieno to put in effort and concentrate on her studies for a positive transformation in her future.
Atieno obliged to attend school by January 15, conveyed her happiness and appreciation to Jumwa for the thoughtful gesture.
“I never saw this kind of support coming my way. I’m very happy now that I can go to school to fulfill my dream,” she said.
The young girl has been experiencing restless nights due to her parents’ inability to afford tuition, while her peers are already attending classes. Despite this financial challenge, she is determined to excel in her studies and has committed to working hard.
Oduor praised Jumwa for supporting her daughter’s fees. “I’m a boda boda operator to feed my family. My daughter almost committed suicide as we could not raise the money to take her to school,” she said.
