Rainstorm Leaves Ekiti Residents Homeless

On Friday, March 3, a heavy downpour destroyed over 105 structures in Oke-Ako, Ikole Local Government Area, Ekiti State, rendering several families homeless.

The rainfall, which began around 3 p.m., also caused damage to the town’s energy infrastructure, leaving residents completely without power.

According to state vice-governor Monisade Afuye, who visited the affected region on Saturday, March 4th, the event was extremely devastating.

Saturday, Victor Ogunje, the Deputy Governor’s Special Assistant for Media, issued a statement in which he quoted the Governor as expressing relief that no one perished in the massive storm.

The assertion read;

“I extend my condolences on behalf of His Excellency, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, for the devastation caused by a rainstorm to numerous residential buildings and utility poles in this city, which we believe must have affected the victims’ wellbeing. Numerous residential buildings and electricity facilities had their roofs ripped off by the torrential downpour, leaving a large number of people homeless and helpless. We sympathize with the victims during these difficult times and implore them to remain calm, as this type of natural disaster is difficult to prevent. However, with appropriate precautions and efforts, its effects can be mitigated.
As a result, the administration of Governor Oyebanji is prepared to assist individuals interested in tree planting, and programs will soon be implemented to protect our environment and reduce the damage caused by rainstorms to our buildings. Planting trees is essential. I have observed that landlords in this area do not plant trees, as I do not see any standing alongside our homes. Let us cultivate the practice of tree planting to serve as storm breakers.
Let me also assure you that the state government won’t abandon you and allow you to regret these current devastating conditions. We will provide all the assistance necessary to mitigate the impact this situation must have had on your lives “.
