Raila’s Roadmap to AU Commission Chair: Masters Degree Tops List of 4 Must-Haves
On Thursday, February 15, Raila Odinga, the ex-Prime Minister, declared his aspiration to take over as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission in 2025, succeeding Moussa Faki.
Raila’s candidacy for the prominent AU position has garnered endorsement from global leaders, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. Domestically, he has gained backing from diverse sources, including unexpected supporters like the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Although receiving support from both regional and continental entities would significantly contribute to his goal attainment, Raila must also fulfill specific criteria outlined by the AU if he decides to officially submit his candidacy.
This includes; a Master’s Degree, relevant experience, fluency in at least one AU language, and proof of transformational leadership.
According to AU, the Master’s Degree must be in Law, International Relations, Economics, Diplomacy, Management, Business Administration, Political Science, Social Sciences, or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
A PhD in the same field is also considered an added advantage for interested candidates.
According to his biography, the Azimio leader has an MSc (Master of Science) in Mechanical Engineering from Germany.
Raila must demonstrate 20 years of pertinent professional and international experience as mandated by the selection committee.

“At least ten (10) years served in a progressively senior leadership role(s) preferably in an intergovernmental organization or national government/public service, international or regional institution,” AU adds.
In terms of languages, Raila must exhibit proficiency in one of the AU working languages, and he should be proficient in another AU working language as well.
The official languages of AU are Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, and any other African language.
Raila is multilingual and fluent in both Kiswahili and English.
Raila must showcase experience in transformational leadership with a strategic outlook, along with demonstrated skills in overseeing complex organizations at national, regional, or global levels to meet the requirements.
Furthermore, he is required to showcase a history of establishing unambiguous benchmarks for responsibility, integrity, cost-effectiveness, risk mitigation, and a steadfast commitment to combating fraud and corruption.
