Raila Taps Joho, Oparanya To Lead ODM If He Gets AU Commission Job
Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, has selected former Governors Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya to take on leadership roles within the political party if he secures the position of the next Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
On Thursday, Mr. Odinga suggested during an ODM recruitment rally in Wajir County that if he is compelled to leave the Kenyan political arena due to the AUC position, the two leaders mentioned would be suitable replacements for the role.
He radiated assurance in the capabilities of the two deputy party leaders, expressing confidence that they possess the qualities needed to bring together both the opposition group and its supporters.
“I am here with Governor Oparanya and Hassan Joho; vinara wa ODM. You see these two people, they will unite together. ODM ni chama ambacho kiko na msingi kamili bila kusambaratika,” he said.
“A party is not a person but the members and leaders. I am confident that these two will be able to lead the party effectively. Si wanatosha?” He posed amid cheers from the crowd.
The leader of the ODM party, who also serves as the head of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, reiterated his commitment to guiding the duo even after securing the position of AUC.

“They will continue to conduct the affairs of the party even if I am in Addis Ababa. If they want advice, I will be ready to advise them. ODM will remain intact,” he stated.
The discussions about Mr. Odinga’s succession have been widely covered in recent weeks, following the announcement of his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC). Numerous leaders within the opposition are now expressing their interest in leading the party.
On Wednesday, he reassured everyone that taking on the AUC job would not hinder his active involvement in Kenya’s politics.
Ex-Governor Oparanya from Kakamega has garnered backing for his candidacy, highlighting his substantial political expertise.
Addressing the audience in Butere Constituency last Saturday, he expressed his confidence in leading the party effectively in Mr. Odinga’s absence.
“In the event, that Baba heads to Addis Ababa and secures the presidency of over 50 nations, which could potentially happen by next February, we will have ample time to prepare. I am prepared to seize this opportunity and lead ODM,” stated Oparanya.
