    Raila Ousts 5 Rebel Jubilee Senators from Committees

    As a part of the purge against leaders working with the ruling government, the Azimio la Umoja Coalition expelled five Jubilee Senators from select communities.

    In a notice signed by Senate Minority Leader Ledama Olekina, Garissa Senator Abdul Haji was removed from two committees: the Standing Committee on Health and the Standing Committee on National Security, Defense, and Foreign Relations.

    James Lomenen Ekwoma, a senator from Turkana, was expelled from the Standing Committee on Energy and the Committee on Powers and Privileges.

    Joseph Githuku Kamau, senator from Lamu, was also removed from the Standing Committees on Education and National Security, Defense, and Foreign Relations.

    Senator Fatuma Adan Dullo of Isiolo was also removed from her positions. On the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations and the Committee on County Public Accounts.

    Margaret Kamar, a senator nominated by the Jubilee Party. Who served on the House’s Standing Committee on Education, was not spared by Raila’s latest crackdown on perceived rebels.

    Before issuing an official communication, the Senate Speaker, Amason Kingi, will decide on the proposed changes and issue a decision.

    If approved, the Azimio coalition will be required to recruit new members to fill the vacant positions.

    Raila had previously criticized President William Ruto for purchasing members of parliament from his coalition to weaken the opposition.

    He remarked that a formidable opposition was necessary to keep the government in check.

    “We have stated that if someone wishes to leave, they should inform us and then depart. But the government is attempting to weaken the opposition,” he stated in a February 28, 2023 interview with KTNNews.

    In the Jubilee party, two factions led by East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Kanini Kega and former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni continued to clash.
