Raila Odinga Gifts Gor Mahia FC Ksh1.5M for FKF Premier League Victory
After winning the 2022-2023 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League, the leader of Azimio, Raila Odinga, gave Gor Mahia Football Club Ksh1.5 million on June 25.
Philip Etale, the communications director for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), confirmed to GossipA2Z that Raila, who attended the match at Moi Stadium in Kasarani, awarded the team for the players’ outstanding performance in the 20th Kenyan Premier League championship.
Fans of Gor Mahia, who had put FKF and Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba on the spot for failing to award the team, applauded the reward.
Some supporters argued that it was unfair for the federation to award the team medals and a trophy without providing any funding, especially since the Sports Ministry, led by Namwamba, had promised to improve sports in the country.
In addition, many spectators complained that the award ceremony was poorly staged and that the team deserved better.

My party’s leader, Raila Odinga, presented the club with Ksh1.5 million for winning their 20th league championship.
“Unfortunately, the 2022–2023 league champions did not receive any prize money from FKF Premier organizers due to the lack of a title sponsor,” lamented the former treasurer of Gor Mahia, Sally Bolo.
However, the Gor Mahia team celebrated their victory with song and dance.
Their head coach, Jonathan McKinstry, dedicated the victory to the team’s supporters.
A week ago, we appeared unsure about our chances. I am ecstatic, and I believe that all of our players, coaching staff, management, and fans share this sentiment.
“We owe this historic victory to our loyal fans, who supported the team throughout the arduous journey. Following a period of uncertainty, they deserve happiness,” McKinstry told fans after the game.
In the final match of the season, Gor Mahia defeated the Nairobi City Stars 4-1 after scoring four goals.
The victory gave Gor 70 points, one point more than Tusker FC, and automatic qualification to the CAF champions league.
