Protests Erupt in Embu Over Billy Mwangi’s Abduction

Residents of Embu town staged protests on Friday, demanding the release of 24-year-old Billy Mwangi, who was abducted six days ago.

Mwangi was forcibly taken from a barber shop in Embu on Saturday, December 21, by four masked men armed and driving a double-cabin pickup. Witnesses reported that the vehicle sped off towards the Embu-Nairobi Highway.

Outraged by his disappearance, locals lit fires and blocked roads, urging authorities to investigate and secure his return.

Mwangi’s family has been searching tirelessly across the county but remains in the dark about the motive behind his abduction. Some reports suggest it might be linked to an AI-generated image he posted on X (formerly Twitter) that portrayed President William Ruto negatively.

Mwangi is one of seven youths abducted in December after publishing controversial social media posts critical of the president and his administration. Others include Steve Kavingo Mbisi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Rony Kiplang’at, and Gideon Kibet (aka Kibet Bull).

Since June, 82 abductions have been reported, with 29 individuals still missing, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). Both the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Police Service (NPS) have denied any involvement in these incidents.
