Process of Replacing Raila in ODM Begins, Top Candidate Unveiled
The competition to succeed Raila Odinga as the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has begun, with some Nairobi County delegates endorsing Siaya Governor James Orengo for the role.
In a session led by Nairobi County ODM chair George Aladwa, all 17 branch officials in attendance expressed their full support for Orengo as the next leader of the party.
Raila Odinga is expected to step down from the position as he continues his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
The central management committee of the party is set to convene to discuss the upcoming leadership transitions.
“There will be a vacancy in the party leadership after Raila Odinga steps down, so we are proposing Siaya Governor James Orengo to fill the ODM leadership position,” Aladwa declared.

“As Nairobi delegates, we have unanimously agreed to back Governor Orengo as Raila’s successor.”
Meanwhile, ODM Women’s League chair Catherine Okoth urged the party to prioritize women’s representation in leadership roles.
“We are calling on our party leader to offer more opportunities for women in key positions, allowing our female members to serve and strengthen the party,” she emphasized.
This development comes as various groups within the party strategize to succeed Raila, who is focused on securing the AU Chairmanship in February 2025.
As part of the Azimio coalition, ODM has faced criticism from allied parties calling for an exit from the opposition, citing Raila’s potential departure to the AU.
These discussions arise following a warning from ODM Party Chair Gladys Wanga, who cautioned members against engaging in succession politics too early, instead advising them to focus on party strengthening ahead of grassroots elections.
