Private Developer Evicts Govt Agency After Grabbing Land In Kabete

A private developer has evicted the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) from its land in Kabete, Kiambu County.

The evictions were carried out on Friday, with the developer sending unknown men to bring down structures that had been set up in the contested land.

According to KAGRC Managing Director David Kios, the men arrived at the farm, used to plant-animal feeds, in the morning and began demolishing their structures.

The identity of the private developer is still unknown. Kios, however, urged investigative agencies to intervene in the matter by tracking down the developer and his accomplices.

Kios added that the private developer had been operating through proxies, claiming to be the owner of the title deed.

Unknown individuals had already begun to build various structures on the farm, including a concrete fence, by the time the agency raised the alarm.

“The developer says this is their land but this island had been used by KAGRC since 1946 when the organization was formed,” the MD stated.

“We are shocked and wondering where these people have come from. Where did they get that title?”

The Friday evictions also saw the Union of Kenya Civil Servants (UKCS) call on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to unmask and apprehend the private developer.

Through its representative, Kevin Oketch, the union opined that the incident was unfortunate, explaining that the eviction of the agency would affect farmers across the country.

“Investigations need to be speeded up so that the private developer can be known. As government workers, we believe that this is going to affect the farmers in the country because this is the only place where animal genetics can be done,” Oketch stated.

KAGRC operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and is headquartered in Lower Kabete.

One of the key roles of the organization includes implementing contract mating programs for various institutions.
