President William Ruto Mourns Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s Tragic Passing

President William Ruto expressed his condolences on Monday for the passing of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, whom he hailed as a brave leader.

 Raisi and his Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in Northern Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. The crash claimed the lives of nine individuals aboard the aircraft.

Ruto, in a statement, conveyed his government’s solidarity with the Iranian people and praised Raisi’s devoted service to the public.

 He offered a comprehensive eulogy, stating, “In light of the tragic news of the passing of H.E. Ebrahim Raisi, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Foreign Minister, H.E. Hossein Abdollahian and his entourage of senior officials through a helicopter crash, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the people of Iran at this challenging time.”

He continued, emphasizing Raisi’s fearlessness and commitment to public service, highlighting his efforts to enhance Iran’s global stature. 

Ruto underscored the amicable relations between Kenya and Iran, noting Raisi’s choice of Kenya for his inaugural visit to Africa during his presidency.

Following the President’s condolence message, the Iranian Embassy in Kenya reciprocated with gratitude, expressing appreciation for Ruto’s message and expressing a desire to strengthen the ties between the two nations.

International media reported that Raisi, along with his delegation, was en route from Azerbaijan, where he had met with President Ilham Aliyev and overseen the opening of several dams, including the Qiz Qalasi and Khodaafarin dams.

Last July, Raisi visited Kenya to hold discussions with President William Ruto, focusing on bolstering trade relations. 

During the meeting, agreements were reached to facilitate increased exports of tea, coffee, and meat, aiming to achieve a more favorable trade balance for Iran. 

Ruto praised Kenya’s efforts to create a conducive environment for foreign businesses, a sentiment echoed by President Raisi during the visit.
