President Ruto Condemns Niger Coup, Offers Mediation Aid
President William Ruto has joined other world leaders in condemning the ongoing coup in Niger following reports on Wednesday that President Mohamed Bazoum is being held hostage by his Presidential Guards, who are attempting to usurp power by force.
In a statement released on Friday, President Ruto stated that the rebellion, which he insisted was unconstitutional, undermined the democratic advancements made by African nations over the years.
“Kenya joins the rest of the world in condemning in the strongest terms this unconstitutional act that subverts democracy through a coup-de-etat,” said Ruto. “We also demand the immediate release of President Bazoum, who is reportedly being held by members of the Presidential Guard.”
“Throughout our continent’s history, we have worked ceaselessly to promote democratic principles. This fundamental principle is enshrined in Article 4P of the Africa Union’s Constitutive Act, which condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government.”
President Ruto implored all parties involved to find a peaceful resolution to their ongoing dispute, one that does not endanger the lives and livelihoods of Niger’s citizens.

“We call for the swift restoration of constitutional rule ensuring the protection of the population and a return to full civilian authority while upholding the utmost respect for the country’s institutions,” he stated.
“In this time of conflict, we urge all parties to engage in constructive dialogue to restore peace in this brotherly nation, which has steadfastly stood against terrorism and its agents in the Sahel region,”
While noting that the resurgence of military coups merits international attention and condemnation, Ruto stated that Kenya is willing to serve as a mediator in the conflict if the Africa Union grants permission.
“Let us stand united to reaffirm our dedication to democracy, freedom, and the progress we have made. “We must remain vigilant against any return to the dark ages that could threaten the hard-won gains of democracy,” he said.
“Should it be deemed appropriate, Kenya is willing to assist in resolving the conflict under the auspices of the Africa Union.”
