    President Ruto Addresses Abduction Concerns

President William Ruto subtly addressed the rising concerns over alleged abductions during his visit to Homa Bay County on Friday, December 27. The event, hosted at the Raila Odinga Stadium, marked the Odi Genowa Governorโ€™s Cup 2024 finals.

Speaking to thousands of residents after the match, Ruto urged parents to prioritize their childrenโ€™s safety. While he avoided mentioning specific cases, he emphasized the importance of parental vigilance, stating, “These children are a blessing. I urge parents to protect their children.”

Ruto also reaffirmed his administrationโ€™s commitment to ending abductions, promising, “As a government, we will play our part to ensure abductions become a thing of the past. We want our youth to live harmoniously and grow into people of integrity to drive our nation forward.”

Raila Odinga, the AUC chair hopeful, who also attended the event, directly appealed to Ruto to take decisive action. “We want our youth to be safe. I have asked my friend William Ruto to ensure abductions, detentions, and torture of our youth stop, and perpetrators are brought to justice,” Raila declared.

During the event, Ruto announced a KSh 2 million cash prize for the 66 teams that participated in the tournament, initiated by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga. He also addressed the unfinished Raila Odinga Stadium, pledging KSh 500 million for its completion.

โ€œMany of you had to sit under the scorching sun today,โ€ Ruto noted. โ€œWhen I return for Mashujaa Day celebrations, this stadium will have a canopy, ensuring no one endures the sun again.โ€

Rutoโ€™s remarks on abductions followed growing pressure from stakeholders, including the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, which reported 82 cases of abductions since Juneโ€™s anti-Finance Bill protests. Leaders like his economic advisor, Moses Kuria, have called for public action, urging Kenyans to support a petition addressing the issue.
