Political Sparks Fly as Gachagua Hints at Ruto-Raila Clash at Kimathi Widow’s Funeral

On Sunday, May 7, Vice President Rigathi Gachagua hinted at an impending confrontation between President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga, likely to occur during the funeral of the late Mukami Kimathi.

Gachagua disclosed during a memorial service for freedom fighter Field Marshal Mukami Kimathi that Ruto will attend her burial on Saturday, May 13.

The development occurred a few hours after Raila confirmed his attendance at the funeral home where Mukami’s body was being preserved when he visited Lee Funeral Home.

“The President has ordered the government to oversee Mukami’s burial arrangements to give her a proper send-off.

“Ruto himself has promised that he will lead the nation on the day we bury our freedom fighter,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua stated that everyone is welcome, an apparent response to Raila’s earlier assertion that no one would prevent him from attending the funeral.

“We’ve heard that some people wish to attend the funeral, and we want to reassure them that they’re welcome.

“This burial will bring together MauMau fighters who fought for independence and collaborators who assisted colonizers in acquiring our land,” the DP declared.

Gachagua revealed, in what could be a tense moment, that Mukami’s burial would provide an opportunity to discuss land injustices.

“The burial of freedom fighter Mukami could spark a conversation about land ownership in Kenya.

“The Mau Mau fought for land but did not receive it after independence. During Mukami’s burial, he outlined the funeral’s agenda: “We would like to question who benefited from those lands and discuss what should be done moving forward.”

Raila confirmed his attendance by stating, “I cannot miss Shujaa Mama Mukami wa Kimathi’s funeral. We were very close, and I will attend Njabini’s last ceremony on earth.”

The burial of Mukami will mark the first time since the contentious presidential election on August 9, 2022, that Raila Odinga will share a podium with the Head of State and his deputy.
