Political Game Changer: Mudavadi & Ruto Back UDA-ANC Merger Plan
The stage has been set for the Amani National Congress (ANC) to merge with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
ANC officials, led by former party leader Musalia Mudavadi, who is now the Prime Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, endorsed the merger during a meeting with Ruto at State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday.
ANC party leader Issa Timamy emphasized that merging with UDA is aligned with ANC’s constitutional provisions. He highlighted that unity would strengthen their collective ability to govern effectively in Kenya.
Timamy expressed ANC’s preference for a merger by amalgamation, creating a new political entity combining ANC and UDA. This approach, he argued, would offer legal protection to their members, especially elected representatives at county assemblies and Parliament.
He stressed that the merger should mark the start of a new era focused on innovation and progress, fostering a vision of a stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous nation.
Timamy acknowledged that change brings uncertainty but emphasized the need to manage it effectively to improve governance for the people.
Mudavadi urged ANC officials and members to join this larger political formation, emphasizing the importance of making politically prudent decisions.

As the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Mudavadi explained that it wouldn’t be practical for him to support candidates against the President, given his official position. He underscored the importance of avoiding conflicts of interest and ensuring alignment within the political landscape.
Mudavadi emphasized that working together with President Ruto ensures stability and progress, referring to him as a safe pair of hands for the ANC.
He clarified that the merger was not coerced by the President but rather emerged from ongoing discussions. He encouraged ANC members to embrace the opportunity for collective success under Ruto’s leadership.
Ruto expressed his commitment to strengthening democracy in Kenya, asserting that governance should be driven by the people, not external influences like the deep state. He emphasized the role of strong political parties in promoting national unity and democratic governance.
At the State House meeting, key figures included ANC Secretary-General Omboko Milemba and National Chairman Kelvin Lunani, as well as UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, UDA Secretary-General Cleophas Malala, and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah.
