Political Firestorm: MP Salasya Escapes Chaos After Explosive Remarks (VIDEO)
Sunday, Member of Parliament for Mumias East Peter Salasya was hurried to safety after his remarks at a political event went awry.
The MP was captured in a video that went viral addressing the citizens of Mumias regarding the condition of the sugar industry in the area and the role that politics had played in the decline of the formerly prosperous economic sector.
Salasya accused the governor of Kakamega, Fernandes Barasa, who was also present, of failing to do sufficient to revive the moribund sector.
The Member of Parliament was especially critical of Barasa’s predecessor, Wycliffe Oparanya, for having put forth a bill that would have authorized the County Government to remunerate farmers with Ksh100 million. Oparanya used the bill as a weapon to overcome Barasa.
The Member of Parliament was subsequently assaulted by thugs, whom he claimed were funded by a prominent politician from the area.

”The goons of this governor of Kakamega Fernandes Barasa attacked me so innocently while addressing residents of Mumias West, but thank you my tight security for ensuring no one moves closer to me to attack me,” the MP remarked in a statement afterward.
The MP was, however, hurried to safety by one of Salasya’s security officers amidst the altercation.
The Member of Parliament has been an outspoken advocate for the prioritization of sugarcane producers and the payment of their dues in matters about the sugar sector.
The Member of Parliament was pressuring the incumbent Governor to execute the reforms that Oparanya had begun, which aimed to revive the Mumias Sugar Company and protect the interests of sugar cane cultivators.
Salasya criticized Barasa during President William Ruto’s August visit to the Western region, alleging that the Governor had sided with investors seeking to exploit the sugar industry at the expense of farmers.
