Political Dynamics: Ruto’s Alleged Sidelining of Gachagua and Favoring Mudavadi Explained

Political analysts differed on whether President William Ruto favored Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi while marginalizing Vice President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday, May 7.

Mudavadi was leading the Kenyan delegation at the eleventh high-level summit of the regional oversight mechanism of the peace, security, and cooperation framework for heads of state and government in Bujumbura, Burundi when the experts made their remarks.

Experts observed that Mudavadi was merely performing a delegated function and that there was no politics involved.

Herman Manyora, a political analyst, argued that the president did not favor Mudavadi in any way by inviting him to an event.

Mudavadi must fight for himself if he wants to win the presidency, as Manyora explained. “Those claiming that the President is preparing Mudavadi to succeed him may be trying to make the people of Western Kenya happy, but Mudavadi must fight for himself if he wants to win the presidency.”

Political analyst Martin Andati, on the other hand, agreed with Manyora, arguing that the president has no obligation to prepare anyone to succeed him.

Andati stated, “Mudavadi should strengthen his ANC party and devise persuasive mechanisms to convince Kenyans to elect him after Ruto’s presidency.”

Jane Thuo, a political analyst, held a contrary view, arguing that Ruto was grooming Mudavadi to succeed him when he leaves office.

Thuo explained that Mudavadi’s chances of winning the presidency with Ruto’s support are favorable.

“Mudavadi can lead this country, now that he is not controversial, and because he served as a minister under the Moi regime and deputy prime minister under the Kibaki presidency,” Thuo explained.

According to Thuo, President William Ruto will likely demote his vice president Rigathi Gachagua and endorse Mudavadi’s presidential bid.

Ruto abroad

President William Ruto departed the country on Friday, May 5, to attend the coronation of King Charles III in the United Kingdom on Saturday, May 6.

The president was expected to visit the Netherlands on Sunday, May 7 for a series of bilateral meetings.

“Kenya cherishes its cordial relations with the United Kingdom. We believe that by broadening and strengthening our ties with the international community, we can accelerate the transformation of our nation,’ the president stated while in the United Kingdom.

Due to Ruto’s absence from official business in the United Kingdom. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was expected to fulfill constitutionally mandated government responsibilities.

President Ruto chose Mudavadi to represent him at the DRC peace summit because he is the country’s third-highest-ranking executive officer.

Sending Gachagua would have resulted in an absence of leadership.

Mudavadi on peace summit

Mudavadi stated that the summit’s purpose was to evaluate the security situation. In the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Republic of Sudan, and the Region as a whole so that member states could deliberate on the next steps.

“It is disheartening that despite the progress made in the region, several challenges persist or have intensified, most notably, the current deteriorating security situation in Eastern DRC, particularly in Ituri and North Kivu, where serious escalation of fighting and targeted killings are reported to be taking place,” Mudavadi stated.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is the mediator for the DRC peace talks, updated Mudavadi on the initiative’s progress.

Uhuru and Mudavadi met at the summit’s fringes.
