Political Battle at Ministry of Health as Western MPs Defend CS Deborah Barasa, Issue Warning to Ruto

Tensions are rising at the Ministry of Health headquarters as a power struggle between Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Deborah Barasa and Principal Secretary (PS) Harry Kimtai takes a political twist. Lawmakers from the Western region have now stepped in, issuing strong ultimatums.

MPs Accuse Government Officials of Targeting Barasa

During a press conference at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday, Bungoma County MPs John Waluke and Jack Wamboka accused certain government officials of plotting against CS Barasa. They claimed that a recently reappointed Cabinet Secretary had joined forces with PS Kimtai to frustrate her leadership.

The MPs suggested that Barasa could be a victim of tribal politics, warning that they would not allow her to be sidelined.

    Allegations of Financial Misconduct

The legislators further alleged that some individuals within the ministry were involved in a financial scandal linked to the now-defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). According to them, these officials were using the scandal as an excuse to attack Barasa.

“They have stolen public funds, and now they are using a former Cabinet Minister to fight her. Kenya belongs to all of us,” Waluke declared.

    Disputes Over Key Appointments

Another key issue fueling the tension is the recent revocation of certain appointments made by CS Barasa. The lawmakers criticized PS Kimtai for overturning her decisions, claiming it was a deliberate move to weaken her authority.

In January, Kimtai appointed former Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) boss Andrew Mulwa to lead the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP). However, CS Barasa quickly reversed this decision, escalating the standoff between the two officials.

    MPs Warn Against Political Interference

The MPs made it clear that they would oppose any efforts to push Barasa out of office, especially with growing speculation about a Cabinet reshuffle. They also threatened to withdraw support for the unity pact between President William Ruto and Raila Odinga if the attacks on Barasa continued.

Additionally, the lawmakers warned PS Kimtai to focus on his job and stop interfering with the CSโ€™s responsibilities.

“They should respect their appointments by the President and stick to their roles. The PS should do his job, and the CS should do hers,” Waluke added.

As the leadership battle intensifies, all eyes are on the Ministry of Health to see how the situation unfolds.
