Police Present Maina Njenga 4 Days Post Arrest

Following the search of his Kiserian residence that led to his detention, former Mugiki leader Maina Njenga was charged with possession of offensive weapons.

On Monday, July 24, while appearing before the Makadara Law Courts, the prosecution detailed the recovery of 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus, and three plows from his residence.

The prosecution argued that there was a reasonable possibility that the weapons were intended to be used in a manner that would be detrimental to public safety.

“On July 20, 2023, in the Kiserian area of Kajiado County, John Maina Njenga, Peter Njoroge Kamunya, and Felix Ratu Lakishe jointly organized an unlawful assembly and procession scheduled to take place in Nairobi City County and other parts of the Republic of Kenya,” the prosecutor argued.

His attorney, Ndegwa Njiru, told GossipA2Z that it was unclear where Njenga was being detained before his court appearance and that he had not spoken to him since his arrest a week ago.

“I am currently on my way to court, but I do not know where he was held before today,” he stated.

The former leader of the Mungiki tribe was abducted from his residence last week, and the government has remained silent about his whereabouts.

Alongside his two brothers and personal assistant, Njenga was arrested.

According to his family, police raided his home around 8 p.m. and dragged Maina and others out of the residence.

This is a violation of human rights. His father complained that it was wrong for the police to storm homes and beat individuals without provocation.

Maina’s father complained that Maina and others were arbitrarily assaulted by the police.

“The era of detention without trial has arrived. Maina Njenga, my client, is still absent. He was abducted by police whose Subarus were registered in South Sudan. He was never detained by the police,” Njiru wrote on July 23.

Maina Njenga was among the prominent individuals detained during the three days of the Azimio La Umoja demonstrations.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Mathare MP Antony Oluoch, Kilifi South MP Ken Chongy, Kilifi County Speaker Teddy Mwambire, and Mabatini MCA Wilfred Odallo were among the other leaders arrested.

According to reports, the leaders were apprehended out of concern that the demonstrations would escalate. They are regarded as vital to Raila Ondinga’s political mobilization apparatus.

On Wednesday, July 26, the opposition called for additional demonstrations against the rising cost of living and electoral reforms.
