Police Officer Arrested After Opening Fire At Raila’s Security At Airstrip
On Friday, a prison guard stationed at Lodwar GK prison was arrested in connection with an attempted assault on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga’s security shortly before he arrived at Lodwar Airstrip in Turkana.
Friday morning, police officers led by Sub County Police Commander Lemmy Njiru were patrolling the airstrip, according to a police report lodged under O/B 15/13/10/2023 at the Lodwar Police Station.
The officers were assigned to receive Raila and his entourage at approximately 11:00 a.m., and later to accompany him to the Turkana Cultural Festival.
However, a penitentiary guard in civilian attire and carrying a G3 rifle emerged at the airstrip. Moments later, as he approached the security team, he discharged a shot into the air.
SCPC Njiru and the security team immediately charged the prison warden and pinned him to the ground.
The suspect was disarmed and taken into custody at the Lodwar Police Station. Since then, it has been discovered that the prison guard works at Lodwar GK Prison.
The detectives who interrogated him at the station had yet to determine the incident’s motivation.

According to the police report, he will be interrogated further by a multi-agency commission composed of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and officers from the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
The incident occurred before Raila Odinga attempted to address Turkana residents at the Turkana Festival, where he encountered significant opposition.
His security whisked him away after the event descended into pandemonium.
This occurred after some Jubilee leaders criticized the former prime minister for ignoring the Turkana community, resulting in a conflict between their supporters and Raila’s supporters.
Joseph Emathe, a representative for the Turkana Central constituency, adjourned the meeting due to the disorder. Later, while speaking to his constituents outside the venue, Raila blamed President William Ruto for his plight.
The former Prime Minister claimed that the president incited Turkana leaders against him. Ruto has not responded to the allegations as of yet.
