During a search at a church in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, police seized approximately 26 sacks filled with bhang worth approximately Sh6 million.

According to a lead detective who addressed the media on Tuesday, the police conducted the operation after receiving tips from concerned citizens.

Multiple suspects were apprehended at the church after police discovered bhang concealed in various areas of the building. The number of suspects apprehended had not been disclosed at the time this article was published.

“Strangely, we have learned that this church is selling bhang to its congregants. We have captured several suspects, but the major culprits are on the run,” police stated, adding that they had launched a manhunt for the pastors, staff, and congregants.

“One gunny bag has stones. I hear the jargon the church members use for bhang is ‘stones’. You can thus imagine the weight of the bhang we have seized,” the detective added.

The police also suspected that the congregants were drug addicts in concealment.

In addition, the church was accused of selling stolen property, including furniture and electronics. Suspects apprehended at the location were allegedly observed butchering a goat to commemorate a well-coordinated night operation in which they raided homes and stole property.

“We know that these suspects work in cahoots with residents, but we applaud concerned members of the public who raised the alarm. We will liaise with them to track the church attendees who are well-known in the society,” the detective added.

The bhang was documented as an exhibit that will be presented in court during the suspects’ arraignment. Detectives will also request that the court deny bail to the suspects and provide instructions on how to destroy the illicit drugs.

Kajiado police are still searching for the occupants of a black Land Cruiser Prado TX that was discovered transporting cannabis worth Ksh9.5 million.

On September 8, the car was embroiled in an accident that led to the occurrence. Before police arrived, the occupants fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle behind.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed in a statement that the Prado was traveling at a high rate of speed along the Kaloleni-Mavueni Road before it veered off the road and into a ravine.
