Petition Filed to Revoke Appointment of Ruto’s New Cabinet

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and activist Wanjiru Gikonyo have petitioned the High Court to annul the appointments of the recently sworn-in cabinet secretaries.

The petition highlights multiple reasons for challenging the appointments, notably the assertion that the vetting process, which led to the approval of the nominees, did not include sufficient public participation.

Additionally, the petition raises integrity issues, specifically mentioning Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, who is currently under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

“Through a letter dated 31st July 2024 to the Director of Public Prosecutions, the EACC Chief Executive Officer raised integrity concerns about the 20th Interested Party (Oparanya),” the petition reads in part.

A fresh petition could potentially disrupt President William Ruto’s efforts to swiftly implement his plans, following the recent turmoil from anti-government protests.

President Ruto has recently urged Kenyans to support his administration, highlighting the creation of a broad-based government as a compelling reason for national unity.

โ€œI ask citizens of our great nation to give a chance to these great men and women in this new cabinet and to support them to deliver the mandate that has been given to them constitutionally and as they perform their duties to the best interest of our country,โ€ Ruto stated after presiding over the swearing in of Cabinet Secretaries at State House, Nairobi on Thursday.

President Ruto has strongly endorsed the new appointees, showing his full confidence in them, but Kenyans remain unconvinced.

When President Ruto disbanded the cabinet following the anti-finance bill protests, many Kenyans saw it as a positive move toward reform and a new chapter in the country’s political landscape, signaling an opportunity to address corruption within the government.

However, just weeks later, President Ruto reappointed several members from the previous cabinet, much to the dismay of Kenyans who opposed the decision.

Many Kenyans felt that the President’s actions lacked genuine intent to bring about meaningful change in Kenya, viewing the reshuffle as merely superficial.

Key figures who were reappointed to the cabinet include Soipan Tuya (Defence), Aden Duale (Environment and Climate Change), Alice Wahome (Lands), Kipchumba Murkomen (Youth & Sports), Davis Chirchir (Roads & Transport), Salim Mvurya (Investments & Trade), Rebecca Miano (Tourism & Wildlife), and Alfred Mutua (Labour).
