Peter Munya Reveals Discord in Azimio Coalition: How Raila Odinga Betrayed Co-Principals
The Party of National Unity (PNU) leader, Peter Munya, has unveiled notable disagreements within the Azimio la Umoja coalition, arising from actions taken by its leader, Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Spice FM, Munya voiced his unease regarding Raila’s recent decision to talk with the Kenya Kwanza government, which contradicts previous agreements with coalition co-principals.
Munya characterized the contentious matter as the “donation of members of ODM into the Kenya Kwanza government,” highlighting that this move was made without coalition-wide consensus.
He emphasized that the Azimio leadership had previously discussed and unanimously decided that joining the government was not advisable.
“The key event that has made us quite uncomfortable is the one we are calling the donation of members of ODM into the Kenya Kwanza government.”
“There had been discussions, and we had been informed by our Azimio leader that there were talks to join the government. We discussed and agreed that it was not right to join the government because the issues we had been advocating during demonstrations led by our leader and Gen Z had not been resolved,” Munya stated.
Munya elaborated on the coalition’s position, emphasizing that any collaboration with the government should be legally structured, similar to the accord made with former President Mwai Kibaki.
This agreement provided a clear framework and ensured that the coalition’s goals would be addressed.

“We reached a point where there was an agreement that if the opposition were to join the government, it had to be a government established by law, like the one we joined with Kibaki, which had an accord clearly outlining the government’s objectives,” Munya explained.
He stressed that without such a framework, joining the government would merely support the current administration, which is under significant pressure.
“There was a consensus not to join the government,” Munya affirmed, indicating the coalition’s commitment to remaining in opposition to push for unresolved issues and necessary changes.
Regarding PNU’s position within the Azimio la Umoja coalition, Munya clarified that the party remains committed to the alliance for now.
He mentioned that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) had engaged in extensive discussions about their stance, ultimately deciding that staying within Azimio was the best course of action.
“PNU is still in Azimio. I had given my opinion that if things continue as they are, we would consider leaving. I invited our NEC to evaluate whether we should stay or go, and after thorough discussions and consultations with other coalition parties, we agreed that it may not be opportune to leave at this point. We are stronger together,” Munya remarked.
He noted that if PNU were to leave, it would be more strategic to do so collectively with other coalition parties, ensuring a significant impact in advocating for desired changes from the opposition side.
