Patients Thrown Out of a Nakuru Hospital as Management Row Escalates
Following the revocation of the prolonged lease title of the 25-hectare parcel of land, the Nakuru County government has assumed control of the Nakuru War Memorial Hospital.
The hospital was accused of forging documents to have its tenure extended by the county officers who raided and shut it down.
The facility’s operations were disrupted by the violent takeover. Those affected included patients who were transferred to other hospitals.
In addition, medical personnel were stationed in nearby hospitals pending their transfer.
“The county government of Nakuru wishes to inform the public and the country at large that it has today, October 27, 2023, taken over the management of Nakuru War Memorial Hospital beginning today,” Nakuru County Secretary Dr Samuel Mwaura stated during the takeover at the facility.

The 99-year lease that began in 1922 expired in April 2021, despite the management’s extension request, which the county government alleged was forged.
“Nakuru County government wishes to convey to the public that It has taken over the custodian of the public land in Nakuru County, that piece of land known as Nakuru Municipality, following the de-gazettement of a lease title given in the name of Nakuru War Memorial Hospital,” Mwaura added.
Dr. Mwaura emphasized in his speech that the hospital administration forged documents to apply for an extension following the expiration of its 99-year lease in 2021.
On the same plot of land are the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital, the Annex Hospital, and the statehouse’s helipad, which is adjacent to the aforementioned hospital.
The land on which the three facilities are situated is estimated to cost over Ksh1 billion.
However, Nakuru War Memorial Hospital asserted that it had not been notified and that the search and closure were politically motivated.
