Pathologists Begin Post-Mortem as Shakahola Death Toll Reaches 98

On the seventh day of the investigation into the disturbing cult in Shakahola, Kilifi County, whose members died from starvation, government pathologists were scheduled to begin post-mortem examinations on Thursday.

The investigation has reached its seventh day.

As of Wednesday evening, 98 people’s deaths had been officially confirmed as a result of the incident in which it is alleged that Pastor Paul Mackenzie Nthenge of the Good News International Church instructed members to starve themselves to “meet Jesus.”

Detectives and pathologists are continuing to search the Shakahola forest. For any additional shallow graves or followers of Nthenge who may be hiding there.

In the meantime, people from all over the country are continuing to congregate in the region. In the hopes of finding any information on loved ones who may have been involved with the murderous cult.

On Wednesday, sources close to the investigation stated that more than 300 people were still missing. With the vast majority of the deceased being children.

As a result of the operation, the area of Chakama Ranch that contains Shakahola Forest has been cordoned off. And a 30-day curfew that is in effect from dusk until dawn has been ordered.

On Wednesday, the government imposed restrictions on access to the area for the media as well.

In the time since the police have also detained fourteen members of the cult.

Mackenzie was arrested and charged with two counts of murder. And two counts of manslaughter a month ago after two children died of starvation. While they were in the care of their parents.
