Second Lady Pastor Dorcas Rigathi has collaborated with matatu and boda boda drivers to promote her anti-alcoholism campaign.

Following a meeting with members of the transport industry at her residence in Karen, the Second Lady stated that the transport industry provides the ideal opportunity to educate young people about the dangers of alcoholism.

The Second Lady observed that the partnership will enable her office to offer training and impart skills to staff in the transport industry.

The collaboration will also seek to combat drug and substance abuse among industry employees.

“As fathers and mothers of the land we are going to walk with these young people and we are going to give them the right counsel,” she explained.

Matatu Industry participants, led by Dickson Mbugua, the Chairperson of the Matatu Welfare Association, and Nelson Mwangi, the Chairperson of Super Metro Matatu Sacco, witnessed the event.

Mwangi told the media that he was ecstatic to receive the Second Lady’s support, noting that the menace had afflicted some of the employees who were responsible for his fleet.

“We, Super Metro, feel blessed because this is a journey we started a while back of training and retraining our drivers when we realized that they are being affected by alcoholism and drug addiction,” noted Mwangi.

Another participant in the industry, Nyaure, remarked that the issue had afflicted approximately 85 percent of sector employees.

“Our industry was hard hit by the issue of drugs. We are looking at 85 percent of the workers who are hard hit by the issue of drugs,” Nyaure observed.

“She (Pastor Dorcas) has come through for us and we are going to partner with her and the clergy. We need spiritual breakthroughs and support from the government on this issue.”

Since assuming office, Pastor Dorcas has committed to rehabilitating drug-addicted youth, particularly in the Mount Kenya region and in Nairobi.

The Second Lady has established rehabilitation centers to help afflicted individuals recognize that excessive alcohol consumption is a disease that requires sacrifice and effort to overcome.

Notably, the first cohort from multiple centers has already graduated and is in various phases of becoming economically productive.
