Parliament Suspends Azimio MP Over Critique of Ruto’s State Address

On Tuesday afternoon, within the chamber of Parliament, legislators engaged in a fervent discussion regarding the State of the Nation Address that was inaugurated by President William Ruto the previous week.

Ken Chonga, an MP for Kilifi South, was expelled from the house for comments he made regarding the Majority Leader, his deputy, and the Kenya Kwanza administration, which landed him in disfavor.

The lawmaker from Kilifi South criticized President William Ruto on the floor of the house, asserting that a significant portion of his statements were untrue.

”Hon Chonga you did not have the mic and you have decided to speak then you will stay away from the house for the next two sittings,” Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei stated.

MPs who were in support of Kenya Kwanza, such as majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah and John Kiarie, rose in response to the point of order and demanded that the MP retract his remarks or face expulsion from the chamber.

The first to stand on a point of order was Dagoretti South representative John Kiarie, who alleged that Member Chonga had employed unparliamentary language.

”Is it for him to say that we are speaking lies here, the President is speaking lies,” MP Kiarie noted.

”We are degrading the dignity of this house by allowing members to utter careless statements without substantiating, without giving facts, give us a statement of facts of what is the leader of the majority said or his deputy said that was untrue,” Kimani Ichung’wah remarked.

Shollei urged the member of parliament to retract his statement; however, the request was disregarded as the MP refused.

MP Chonga, however, claimed that his sentiments were misconstrued.

However, Shollei disregarded his reply, asserting that he had exacerbated the situation by reiterating the point at which he intended to withdraw.

The Member of Parliament will therefore be absent for the subsequent two sittings.
