    Owino Freed on Ksh.100K Bail

Both the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East, Babu Owino, and the so-called President of the Ghetto, Calvin Gaucho, were granted bail for 100,000 shillings apiece.

Embakasi East Mp Babu Owino with six others before chief magistrate Lucas Onyina at Milimani Law Courts during the ruling on their bond terms on July 21, 2023

In his judgment this morning, Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina of the Milimani District Court stated that the charge against the accused persons is punishable, if found guilty, by imprisonment for a term not to exceed seven years.

Onyina noted that one of the arguments made by the prosecution was that the witnesses had a high probability of interfering with other witnesses, and she said that this was one of the reasons.

On the other hand, he stated that it was unclear to the prosecution which of the accused individuals would interfere with witnesses.

“A holistic look at the affidavit does not disclose compelling reasons to deny the accused person bond,” the magistrate decided. “Therefore, each of the accused persons is granted a bond of Sh200,000 with an alternative cash bail of Sh100,000,” the judge said.

Tom Odondo, Michael Otieno, Pascal Ouma, Kevin Wambo, and Willys Owino were all granted bond and released as well.

On Thursday, Babu Owino and Gaucho both refuted allegations that they had conspired to engage in acts that would be detrimental to public order.

It is alleged that they committed the offense on several dates within Nairobi City County between the 7th and 23rd of July, 2023, along with other individuals who are not currently before the court.

The prosecution requested that the seven defendants be held for an additional period while the police complete their investigation into the accusations that have been filed against them.

After attending a meeting of a parliamentary committee in Nakuru, Babu Owino was detained on the 19th of July at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
