Overthrow of The Constitution! Chief Justice Koome Unleashes Power-Packed Words Against Ruto
Chief Justice Martha Koome restated that she won’t succumb to pressure from Judiciary critics and firmly upheld her position that the judiciary, as outlined in the Constitution, will uphold its independence.
Koome, addressing the farewell event for former Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi, employed strong language in her speech, reminiscent of the dismissive terms ‘hot air’ and ‘wild goose chase’ she previously used to reject the presidential petition filed by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in 2022.
She reiterated her call to the complainants, spearheaded by President William Ruto and his supporters, urging them to submit grievances against any judge or judicial officer and let the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) handle the proceedings. Nevertheless, she emphasized that all complaints must be submitted and processed by constitutional procedures.
“Such complaints must be lodged and processed in the manner prescribed by the Constitution. The Commission will only act based on evidence and not on blanket statements or allegations that have not been substantiated. Doing otherwise will mean an overthrow of the Constitution and the rule of law. That the Commission will not do!” She warned.
She also assured that any judicial officer or judge found involved in corruption or any form of misconduct will be held accountable under the legal system.
However, she urged them to maintain the principles of justice and resist succumbing to illegitimate requests.
“Let us remain true to the constitutional instruction that the discharge of judicial duties shall be subject only to the Constitution and the law, and not the direction or control of any person or authority,” CJ Koome stated, reiterating similar remarks she issued in her first rebuttal to Ruto who accused the Judiciary of harboring corrupt officials.
In the interim, the Chief Justice urged the Acting Chief Registrar and the Office of the Chief Registrar to maintain the tradition of diligence and commitment that characterized the tenure of Anne Amadi in that position.

“I urge Kenyans to remain vigilant to safeguard the hard-won gains of our Constitution including that of Judicial Independence and the Rule of Law. These are sacrosanct promises of our Constitution. They are gains for which Kenyans died and lost property and limbs. Therefore, they must remain our True North, Always!”
Amadi completed a decade-long term after taking office in 2012. During her tenure, she administered the oath of office to two heads of state, namely Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 and 2017, as well as William Ruto in 2022.
Koome praised her for her commendable efforts and expressed anticipation of extending her impactful contributions through the individuals in the registrar’s office.
“Let us all reflect on the profound impact Hon. Anne Amadi has had on the Judiciary and draw inspiration from her exemplary service as we forge ahead in our quest to deepen access to justice and further realization of the social transformation promise of our Constitution,” CJ Koome remarked.
“Amadi. You have served with unwavering commitment and unparalleled dedication, playing an instrumental role in supporting the leadership of the Judiciary through a transformative era,” she added.
The ex-judiciary employee received recognition for their role in shaping judicial systems, setting forth explicit administrative guidelines, and instituting standardized operating procedures.
