Outrage in Meru: Locals Torch Church, Accuse Pastor of Sucking Followers’ Breasts During Sermons
Enraged residents of Kanjai in Nkomo Ward, Meru County, have burned down a church after accusing its pastor of inappropriate conduct involving women and children’s breasts during services.
The locals, who spoke to K24 Digital, accused 43-year-old Pastor Daniel Mururu of engaging in cult-like activities with hundreds of unsuspecting followers over the past decade.
Former church member Janet Karimi revealed that the controversial pastor forced congregants into bizarre practices under the guise of prayer.
“I was part of his congregation but left last year after realizing he was practicing witchcraft instead of preaching the gospel,” Karimi stated.
After setting the African Inland Pentecostal Church (AIPC) ablaze on Tuesday, villagers and church members also accused the pastor of shaving followers’ pubic hair, slaughtering goats and smearing the blood on their legs and tongues while chanting strange words.
“Strange things happened in this church, yet we continued attending despite the alarming incidents. Sometimes he would slaughter a goat or chicken, smear the blood on people’s bodies, and mutter strange words; other times, he would suck women’s and children’s breasts, shave their private parts, and keep the hair, claiming it was for prayer purposes. I believe he’s a witch doctor, not a pastor,” said a church member.
They further alleged that the pastor had enlisted ushers to assist in these inappropriate acts with children.
“He would also instruct women to remove their underwear and burn them in the church, claiming it would help them keep their husbands faithful and ensure lasting marriages,” added another resident, Muriki.

Angry locals stated that they had previously reported the matter to the Ameru Njuri Ncheke council of elders, who summoned Mururu, but he refused to appear.
“He was summoned by Njuri Ncheke but ignored it, so the locals decided to burn the church, calling it another ‘Shakahola,’ because his actions are satanic and demonic. We cannot allow this fake religion to continue brainwashing innocent people in our community,” said another resident, John.
The locals also urged Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to intervene, ensuring a thorough investigation and that the perpetrator faces the full extent of the law.
Pastor Responds
Speaking after recording a statement with the DCI, the controversial pastor denied the allegations, urging the police to investigate.
“I have been preaching for the last 20 years, and none of these accusations are true. The law should take its course because they have even burned the church and destroyed property worth Ksh5 million,” Mururu said.
Mururu claimed his life was in danger and requested police protection for himself and his family, citing multiple death threats from unidentified individuals.
Confirming the incident, area OCS Nicholas Musyoka stated that police have launched an investigation and urged residents to report matters to the authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands.
