Oparanya Expresses Interest In ODM Leadership Amidst Raila’s Potential AUC Role
Former Kakamega Governor and ODM deputy leader Wycliffe Oparanya has declared his intention to succeed Raila Odinga, who is seeking the African Union Commission chairmanship.
On Saturday, while addressing the audience in Butere Constituency, Oparanya expressed his preparedness to take on the leadership of the party with confidence, highlighting his considerable experience in leading various initiatives.
“In the event, that Baba heads to Addis Ababa and secures the presidency of over fifty nations, which could potentially happen by next February, we will have ample time to prepare. I am prepared to seize this opportunity and lead ODM,” stated Oparanya.
Oparanya underscored his suitability for the leadership role, highlighting his background as a Member of Parliament, Minister, and Governor.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa expressed similar views, commending Oparanya for his extensive experience.
Backing for Oparanya’s candidacy was also voiced by Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Butere Member of Parliament Tindi Mwale. They assured their support and conveyed trust in the strength and unity of ODM under Oparanya’s guidance.
Meanwhile, Raila has conveyed optimism about securing the role of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).
During his speech at the inauguration of the Marani market in Kisii, Raila mentioned that he has garnered support and endorsements from Presidents not only within the East African region but also from leaders beyond.

“I met Ruto and Museveni, I went to get Museveni’s vote, then I met Ruto. They agreed that they would vote for me. Museveni said he will propose my name,” Raila said on his recent visit to Uganda.
To garner backing from East African leaders, Raila announced his intention to travel to Kigali for discussions with Paul Kagame, the President of Rwanda.
“Next week I will meet Kagame, Mama Suluhu has said she will support me, and Salva Kiir has accepted. The other day I was with Ramaphosa, and he said yes, Tshisekedi has said yes,” he added.
Raila informed the Kisii locals that he is prepared to engage in competition with any other candidates expressing interest in the position. He added that if he were to be defeated, he would accept the outcome gracefully.
Governor Simba Arati of Kisii expressed his endorsement of Raila’s candidacy, emphasizing its potential to contribute to the realization of the continent’s aspirations for development, economic progress, and infrastructural advancement.
“Baba, we are supporting you and urge everyone to do it with an open heart not just because they fear your presence in the country. Let everyone support your bid and we shall all be happy”, he said.
On Wednesday, Odinga reassured that his appointment to the AU position would not hinder his active involvement in Kenya’s political affairs, alleviating concerns.
