Olunga’s Close Call: How a Nairobi Land Dispute Almost Cost Him Ksh 67M
In the past, numerous Kenyans have fallen victim to land fraudsters who have wreaked havoc through suspicious transactions that cost individuals millions of dollars.
Michael Olunga, a striker for Al Duhail, nearly lost Ksh67 million on an investment deal to purchase a commercial property in Nairobi.
Back in 2020, the Kenyan forward enlisted the assistance of a real estate agency in order to acquire the land.
After signing the sale agreement, he deposited funds into the company’s bank accounts and made the final payment in September 2022.
He noted, however, that he became suspicious of the transaction after the company delayed the purchase process.
Olunga, alarmed by the turn of events, hired an attorney to compel the company. To either hand over the property or refund the full payment.
Olunga stated in a previous interview with The Standard, “Despite the demand to return our funds or transfer the property to us, the company began treating us with empty promises and counter-promises.”
Surprisingly, they discovered the company advertising the same parcel of land in local newspapers.

Olunga’s attorney sent a letter to the company requesting a refund of the money, but the company did not respond.
This prompted the athlete to file a lawsuit to compel the company to fulfill its contractual obligations.
In prior court documents, Olunga’s attorney asserted that the company had breached the contract. And was obligated to refund the amount plus accrued interest.
Additionally, he accused the company of advertising the property while keeping his client’s Ksh67 million.
Following a series of court proceedings, the company’s representatives contacted Olunga’s attorney. In an effort to settle the dispute out of court.
“Since the parties to the dispute have notified the court of their agreement and filed a consent to settle the dispute, the case will be marked as resolved and withdrawn from court.
“Their consent dated February 27, 2023, settling the dispute will be adopted as an order of this court,” stated Justice Alfred Mabeya.
