Kenya Team Updates
Kenya has no injury concerns, but coach Benni McCarthy has hinted at making lineup changes.
He praised the second-half substitutes from the previous game against Gambia and may give them a chance to start.
“The substitutes brought a lot of energy and a positive mindset. Two of them even scored. Iโll be relying on them because they have what it takes to deliver,” McCarthy said.
Captain Michael Olunga may start on the bench after struggling to make an impact against Gambia, despite scoring a penalty. Jonah Ayunga, who impressed as a substitute, could replace him.
If Olunga is benched, Kenya will need a new captain since vice-captain Joseph Okumu was not called up. Anthony Akumu wore the armband when Olunga was substituted in the last match.
Other players who may be dropped include Eric Johanna, John Avire, Ismail Gonzalez, and Brian Mandela.
Mohamed Bajaber could start after his impressive display against Gambia. Johnstone Omurwa may replace Mandela in defense, while Timothy Ouma is also an option to start.
“Itโs going to be a tough game. Gabon is second in Group F and has shown dominance. But after our last game, the boys have proven what they can do,” said McCarthy.
Gabon Team Updates
Gabon will be boosted by the return of their captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker missed their last game due to suspension but is back to lead the team.
Head coach Thierry Mouyouma praised Kenyaโs fightback against Gambia but is confident his team can handle the challenge.
“We saw how Kenya fought against Gambia. They will be fired up, but we are ready for whatever they bring,” Mouyouma said.
Aubameyang is expected to partner Denis Bouanga in attack. Bouanga has been in top form, with only Mohamed Salah scoring more goals than him in the World Cup qualifiers.
Former Wolves midfielder Mario Lemina is also set to start despite wearing heavy strapping on his knee during training.
