ODM Succession Showdown: Top 5 Contenders to Succeed Raila Odinga

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is at the center of attention as succession politics intensify.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is set to leave behind a significant leadership gap after leading the ODM for over two decades.

Raila is shifting his focus to the African Union Commission (AUC), where he aims to secure a strategic position in continental politics.

Several ODM leaders are positioning themselves to take over the party, which has stood the test of time, surviving multiple election cycles and maintaining a national presence.

These leaders display diverse skills and leadership qualities, with each showcasing their abilities in different areas.

This article from Gossipa2z.com delves into the top five contenders expected to replace the former premier:

Edwin Sifuna

The Nairobi Senator, also ODM’s Secretary General, is a top contender according to a section of ODM leaders. Though he had ambitions of becoming the deputy party leader, Sifuna put those plans aside to prioritize broader party interests.

Sifuna’s journey within ODM began in 2013 when he joined CORD/NASA, steadily rising through the ranks to become Secretary General in 2018. His six-year tenure in this role has placed him at the forefront of party affairs.

Supported by Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, Sifuna is seen as capable of guiding ODM into a new era.

    Simba Arati

The charismatic Kisii Governor has gained popularity for his firm leadership and was recently appointed deputy party leader alongside Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.

Arati’s rise in politics began in 2007 when he unsuccessfully ran for councilor. He later became a nominated councilor in Nairobi, holding the position until 2012. By 2013, he was elected as Dagoretti North MP, a seat he retained in 2017.

His growing influence within ODM could place him in a prime position to lead.

      James Orengo

Currently serving as Siaya Governor, Orengo was once a strong rival to Raila Odinga. Despite their past opposition, ODM Chairman George Aladwa and others now back Orengo to succeed Raila.

Orengo joined ODM in 2005 and played a key role in the push for a new constitution. Over the years, he has been a vital figure in ODM, representing Raila in legal challenges to the 2017 and 2022 presidential elections.

His extensive service gives Orengo an edge over other candidates.

        Anyang’ Nyong’o

The Kisumu Governor and pioneering ODM Secretary General, Nyong’o, is another potential successor. As a scholar, Nyong’o holds the distinction of being the first Kenyan to graduate with First Class Honors in Political Science from East Africa’s oldest university.

Unlike other contenders, Nyong’o has previously held the interim ODM leadership role in 2013. Residents of Kisumu praise him for his governance, further boosting his candidacy.

          Gladys Wanga

The Homa Bay Governor and ODM’s National Chairperson is the only woman among the top contenders. Wanga’s leadership prowess has been evident in various roles, and ODM’s decision to appoint her as Chairperson signals its confidence in her.

Wanga has made history on multiple occasions, including becoming the first woman Secretary-General of Kenyatta University’s Student Union in 2003 and Homa Bay’s first female governor in 2022.

If appointed, she would add to her list of groundbreaking achievements as the ODM party leader.
