ODM Senator Reveals Interesting Details About Governor Kawira’s Impeachment
Senator Godfrey Osotsi has asserted that the majority of senators believed the charges against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza did not warrant impeachment.
During an interview on Thursday, August 29, Senator Osotsi claimed that, despite the initial consensus among senators that the charges were insufficient, UDA Senators unexpectedly shifted their stance two hours into the vote, ultimately deciding to impeach Governor Mwangaza.
The ODM senator controversially alleged that Governor Kawira’s impeachment was orchestrated by the state following a visit by Meru leaders to the State House.
“Most senators initially agreed that the charges against the Meru governor were weak and did not justify impeachment. However, just two hours before the vote, our UDA colleagues inexplicably changed their position and voted for impeachment. We seek a Parliament where decisions are grounded in facts and the rule of law, not influenced by calls to State House,” Osotsi stated.

The Senator criticized parliament, calling it the weakest link in the governance structure due to executive interference.
The Senate upheld the impeachment of Governor Kawira, citing gross violation of the constitution, misconduct, and abuse of office. However, the High Court has since suspended the Senate’s decision to impeach the Meru Governor.
In a ruling on Wednesday, August 21, Justice Bahati Mwamuye issued an order restraining Senate Speaker Amason Kingi from gazetting the impeachment. This ruling followed an appeal filed by Mwangaza challenging her removal from office.

Justice Mwamuye stated, “I am convinced that the application presents constitutional, legal, and factual matters that justify immediate court intervention through the issuance of ex parte interim conservatory orders.”
“Pending the inter partes hearing and determination of the application dated 21/08/2024, a conservatory order is hereby issued to halt any further actions or implementation of the Senate’s resolution to remove Governor Kawira Mwangaza from office by impeachment,” Justice Mwamuye ruled.
