ODM Seeking Justice: Uasin Gishu Scholarship Scandal

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has demanded that victims of the scholarship scandal that has afflicted Uasin Gishu County in recent weeks receive justice.

Jackson Mandago, a former governor who is now a senator, is accused, along with Joshua Lelei and Mishack Rono, of siphoning Ksh.1.1 billion from the Uasin Gishu Education Trust Fund, which was intended for scholarship students’ overseas university fees.

The pupils were destined for universities in Finland and Canada.
ODM condemned the incident in a statement released on Tuesday, claiming it is not an isolated incident but rather a reflection of a larger trend within the William Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza political orbit.

“The Uasin Gishu student airlift fraud is a grievous breach of public confidence. The Raila Odinga-led party believes that this heinous act is indicative of a disquieting pattern of corruption and exploitation on the part of Kenya Kwanza leaders.

The party demanded a comprehensive and unbiased investigation to unearth the truth and bring justice to the victims.

“It is imperative that the perpetrators of this deceitful scheme, including former Governor Jackson Mandago, be held accountable for their actions,” said ODM. “The affected families are not only deserving of restitution but also desire to see the rule of law upheld and justice served.”

Senator Mandago, Rono, and Maritim have been indicted thus far, while hundreds of affected graduates and their parents demand restitution from the county government.

Mandago has already provided the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) with a statement to aid in their investigation. Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have also questioned him about his role in the program.
