ODM MP Warns of 2025 Mass Protests Over Delayed IEBC Reconstitution
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has issued a stern warning about nationwide protests set for 2025 if urgent action isn’t taken regarding the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a statement dated Friday, November 6, Amisi emphasized the critical need for the Commission to be reconstituted promptly to uphold democratic integrity.ย ย
The ODM lawmaker insisted that February 2025 must mark the deadline for completing the process.
He underscored that the absence of a functional electoral commission undermines the nation’s democratic foundations.
“By February 2025, we must have a fully operational and adequately funded IEBC. If this doesnโt happen, citizens will mobilize for a massive, nationwide protest,” Amisi declared.

“We must safeguard Kenyaโs status as a beacon of democracy in Africa. Itโs time for a political renaissance.”
Currently, the IEBC is unable to fulfill its constitutional mandate due to a lack of commissioners, leaving several constituencies without representation as byelections cannot proceed.
Why the Recruitment of IEBC Commissioners Has Stalledย
The government attributed delays in appointing IEBC Commissioners to legal disputes initiated by the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.
Government Spokesperson Issac Mwaura explained that the opposition party contested the selection panel’s composition, seeking to replace Augustine Muli with Koki Muli.
“The recruitment process has stalled due to Azimio la Umojaโs push to replace Augustine Muli with Koki Muli, which led to a tribunal order halting parliament from submitting names to the President for selection panel appointments,” Mwaura stated.ย ย
He assured that President Ruto is ready to appoint the panel once parliament submits the required names, as outlined in his statement dated November 15, 2024.
