ODM Clarifies Its Stance on DP Gachagua Impeachment

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party’s Deputy Leader, Simba Arati, has refuted claims suggesting that the party is involved in efforts to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

While addressing an ODM party delegation in Kisii, the Kisii governor emphasized that the ultimate decision regarding the deputy president’s future rests with the members of Parliament (MPs) and stated that the ODM holds no animosity towards the second in command.

Arati noted that the opposition party is prepared to accept the results of the special motion that MPs are set to vote on.

โ€œAs members of the ODM, we are not advocating for the dismissal of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua; rather, we believe the issue should unfold within Parliament,โ€ Arati explained.

He added, โ€œWe have no involvement in this matter; our desire is for the government to fulfill its responsibilities while the ODM remains a united party. We have assisted President William Ruto in stabilizing his administration, and that is our sole focus,” said the governor.

Simba Arati also rejected allegations that the ODM has formed a coalition with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

โ€œLet no one assert that we are part of Kenya Kwanza; we are not affiliated with Kenya Kwanza; we are members of ODM,โ€ Arati affirmed.

He explained that the opposition party had only interacted with President Ruto’s government on one occasion, specifically when the administration was facing significant challenges.

Arati’s remarks come amid escalating discussions surrounding the potential impeachment of the deputy president, a process that is currently undergoing public participation.

This process has faced various challenges over the past two days, prompting the National Assembly to extend the public participation exercise by an additional day.

On Friday, the National Assembly’s clerk announced that the extension would continue until October 5 to address the issues encountered the previous day.

Numerous disruptions occurred, particularly in the Mt. Kenya counties of Kiambu, Nyeri, and Murang’a, where public participation sessions were temporarily halted due to protests from some residents.
