On Saturday, May 27, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) asked the public for assistance in locating a matatu whose tout had abused a female passenger.

The authority requested the registration number of the public service vehicle (PSV) to track it and take appropriate action.

“Kindly provide us with the vehicle’s registration number,” NTSA wrote.

Before NTSA’s responses, the video had gone viral on multiple social media platforms, with a portion of Kenyans pleading with the Ministry of Transport and other relevant parties to intervene.

The tout was heard accusing the woman of not paying the bus fare. The escalating conflict compelled the tout to forcibly remove the passenger from the vehicle.

A law enforcement officer was captured on video observing the subsequent altercation. Later, he attempted to intervene, but the conductor escaped his grasp.

Despite the presence of the police officer, the tout discarded the passenger’s luggage. Other passengers watched helplessly as the individual was dragged from the aircraft.

It was not immediately determined when the incident occurred. Kenyans demanded immediate intervention from the relevant parties to address what they claimed was escalating into a crisis in Nairobi.

A portion of online Kenyans opined that the matatu industry should draft new measures to address noncompliance and fare evasion issues.

Others pleaded with other passengers to intervene to prevent the escalation of commuters being thrown from matatus, which has resulted in fatalities and serious injuries.

In May 2023, the NTSA and the police apprehended an Embassava Sacco tout accused of throwing a 17-year-old boy from a moving bus.

Wednesday, May 17, the boy died from the injuries he sustained in the incident on Outeting Road. Angry locals later set fire to the Embassava bus.

“In Nairobi, NTSA has arrested and turned over to the police the conductor of the Embasava. The police are likely to file charges against him, according to the official.

Nonetheless, while responding to the unfortunate incident. The bus driver and the Sacco claimed that the passenger was reaching for his dropped phone and was not assaulted as alleged.

While police stand by, the NTSA swiftly responds to the shocking incident of a tout forcibly removing a passenger from a matatu.
