NSPC Announces Major Salary Hike and Promotions for Police Officers in New Review

The National Service Police Commission (NSPC) has revealed plans for a salary increase for law enforcement officers, which will result in higher take-home pay for police officers.

During a press briefing, NPSC Chairperson Eliud Kinuthia stated that police constables will see a salary boost of Ksh4,000, raising their earnings from Ksh21,645 to Ksh25,645.

This adjustment follows discussions with the National Police Service (NPS), with Acting Inspector General Masengeli recommending both salary increases and promotions for officers.

Review List

Constables: According to the review, the longest-serving constables will now receive a minimum gross monthly salary of Ksh25,645, up from the previous Ksh21,645.

With the new structure, the top-earning constables can expect a monthly salary ranging from Ksh50,145 to a maximum of Ksh69,640.

For constables who have completed over 20 years of service and advanced through the salary notches, the cap is set at Ksh69,640. Officers involved in peacekeeping missions will receive similar pay increases.

Senior Assistant Inspector General (SAIG): The chairperson also confirmed a salary rise for senior assistant Inspector Generals of Police, with a Ksh21,026 increase, raising their pay from Ksh200,899 to Ksh221,915.

For the longest-serving Senior Assistant Inspector Generals, the new salary structure offers a gross pay between Ksh310,725 and Ksh409,365, depending on how far they have progressed through the twenty available notches.

Police officers can work their way through the twenty notches in the salary structure, receiving incremental raises each year.

Upon joining, officers start at notch one with a salary of Ksh25,645. If a promotion does not occur, they are moved to notch two in the following year.

Chairperson Kinuthia also addressed concerns regarding officers who have been stuck at the same rank for years, noting that the commission has received numerous complaints.

He explained that several police constables, some with over 30 years of service and clean disciplinary records, have experienced stagnation not due to any fault of their own.

As part of the review, officers aged 53 to 59 who have maintained exemplary disciplinary records have been recommended for promotion.

To date, the commission has approved the promotion of 1,957 officers, including 87 females within this age range.
