“Not interested in money”: DP Gachagua Denies Demanding Ksh.8 Billion Exit Package

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has refuted claims of banging the table during a meeting with President William Ruto after allegedly being denied a Ksh.8 billion compensation package to vacate his position.

The allegations are linked to the upcoming impeachment motion against Gachagua, which is set to be tabled on Tuesday.

Gachagua is accused of demanding compensation for every vote garnered by Ruto in Mount Kenya during their 2022 presidential campaign in exchange for stepping down.

Speaking to local radio stations in the Mt Kenya East region on Sunday, Gachagua dismissed these claims, labeling them unfounded.

He emphasized that he is not interested in any financial benefits, and his focus is on serving the Kenyan people.

“I have no interest in any benefits or any money,” Gachagua stated.

“If money was my objective, I would have accepted offers from political opponents to break away from President Ruto, but I am not greedy. My needs are few; my children are grown, and my wife is a pastor. My priority is the people of Kenya, not money.”

Earlier, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah confirmed that the impeachment motion against Gachagua would be tabled on Tuesday.

“As the MP for Kikuyu, I have signed in favor of Gachagua’s removal from office. We must prevent any internal sabotage within the government,” Ichung’wah announced at a church service in Kikuyu.

The motion accuses Gachagua of violating Article 10 of the National Values and Principles of Governance through public statements that are allegedly inciteful, reckless, inflammatory, and capable of fostering ethnic hatred and division.

Additionally, he faces accusations of violating Articles 147, 148, 174, 186, and 189, which pertain to his duties as the President’s principal assistant, as well as claims of corruptly acquiring assets using taxpayer money.

The allegations also include violations of both national and international laws, undermining the National Cohesion and Integration Act, breaches of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, infractions under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act, and violations of the Penal Code and the Leadership and Integrity Act.

For the motion to pass, it requires support from 233 MPs. Reports indicate that by the close of business on Sunday, 302 members of parliament had signed in support.

If successful, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula will communicate the decision within two days to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi for further action.

The Senate Speaker will then convene the House to discuss the matter within seven days. If at least 45 out of 67 senators endorse the grounds, Gachagua will be removed from office as Kenya’s Deputy President.
