Nine Police Officers Injured in IED Attack in Garissa

On Saturday, March 9th, nine police officers sustained injuries when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near the Welmerer area in Garissa while they were conducting patrol operations.

The incident occurred approximately at 5:30 am, causing an explosion that damaged and destabilized two armored police vehicles.

During the incident, the police officers suffered both significant and minor injuries to different areas of their bodies.

The injuries varied, including those to the head, neck, chest, right limbs, and back.

Four officers sustained severe injuries to their necks and arms, with one of them fracturing both legs.

The remaining five officers suffered minor injuries to their hands and legs, with one of them also sustaining an injury to the head.

Up to this point, all the officers have been released following treatment from medical personnel at a camp within the vicinity.

A rapid response team, known as a Quick Reaction Force (QRF), has been deployed in the region to chase down the insurgents to enhance security and stability in the area.

On March 2nd, law enforcement officials discovered multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs), monetary resources, and additional explosives. This discovery was made following a report from residents regarding militant activities causing fear in the Fafi region of Garissa.

As per the authorities addressing the situation, the officers retrieved cell phones and SIM cards.

The unexpected ambush during an intelligence-driven mission surprised the militants as they were crossing into Kenya from a hideout on their way to Fafi.

In the course of the mission, five individuals believed to be affiliated with al-Shabaab were fatally shot, while four others were captured for additional questioning as part of ongoing investigations.
